Two Wheel Towing - What is it?Two-wheel car towing is you guessed it, pulling a vehicle with only two sets of tire tread on the ground. A tow dolly is also a two-wheeled, short little trailer with ramps that your wheels are guided into and nestled into place for the haul off the ground.
This type of light duty towing is meant when simple roadside assistance is out of question but towing for short distance because two tires will be wearing on the road still during the tow is a good idea. Larger vehicles would require medium duty towing, and really large equipment or vehicles would require the use of a heavy duty tow trucks. Power from a vehicle's engine delivered solely to the front tires is considered to have what is called front-wheel drive. This type of powertrain means your front tires can be hooked up to a tow truck with a dolly and driven away on its rear tires. Because a front-wheel drive vehicles rear wheels are not attached to the drive shaft (connecting the axel to the transmission and engine) the tires in the rear will freely spin happily along without registering a single mile to the car's odometer because again they're not connected to the engine! Rear Wheel & All Wheel Drive VehiclesFor cars that are rear-wheel or all-wheel drive then you can expect a few extra precautionary steps to tow your vehicle correctly. Removing the drive shaft is first and foremost. When driving your driveshaft spins due to the energy produced by your engine distributed through your transmission thus spinning the wheels.
However, if you reverse that operation when the engine is off, then the spinning of your wheels is still going to set in motion parts along the powertrain. Moving parts in your powertrain, while the engine is off, is not good because your oil and transmission fluid has no way of being pumped to areas in your engine that require lubrication when such friction happens, therefore can cause severe damage to the internals of an engine. Once the driveshaft is separated, however, the wheels no longer give the engine any kinetic energy or friction build up due to moving internal parts because there aren't any moving internal engine parts when the drive shaft is not connected. What Type of Tow Truck Do I Need?Depending upon the type of vehicle, and even then, the removal process is not a fast operation though. If you need this done, it would be best left for a professional mechanic and could add cost to the process. Flatbed towing is the safer alternative if your vehicle requires such care.
For those adventurous type who tow on their own often, such as RVers, having to disconnect the drive shaft of your vehicle only to load and unload from a dolly and reinstall the drive shaft is too much effort we always offer long distance towing for those camping trips when you need a flatbed tow truck. Other than getting your own tow dolly, many people do also look to tow bars as another alternative to hauling long distance without the hassles of a dolly and disconnecting the drive shaft. |
